The Challenges

There are four separate challenges in our ROV assignment!

  • In N Out
  • Fish ID
  • Gone Fishin'
  • Operation Fix It
The first is the In N Out challenge!
We have to maneuver our little ROV through all of these hoops (or as many as we can) in under three minutes! For every hoop we get through, we get 1 point.

We're going to need to make sure our ROV can move in all directions because of the different angles of the hoops. That'll be a LOTA fun!

In the real world, this skill is useful for when ROVs are exploring wreckages (such as sunken ships).

The next challenge is the Fish ID Challenge!
We will need to identify and count the number of marine organisms along a transect. We will get 1 point for every correct organism type, and one point for the correct count of that organism.

This is important because we would need to survey areas to check the populations of organisms to see how well an ecosystem is doing.

The third challenge is Gone Fishin'!
We have to collect as many of these organisms as we can. Currently, there is no time limit, and we will get 2 points per specimen.

Actual ROVs need to be very careful when collecting organisms to make sure they are not harmed.
We will need some sort of arm or net to catch this.
The last challenge is Operation Fix It!
We need to pick up the cap and drop it on the pipe. This is in reference to an oil spill. Our ROV is helping the environment by plugging the pipe and stopping the oil leakage.

To do this, we might choose to have a long arm that can lift up the cap. We will need to be really careful and slow in order to complete this.

We will get 10 points if we can successfully cap it.
